The Department of Pharmaceutical Services provides comprehensive
pharmaceutical services to patients, physicians and staff as an
integral part of all Hospital programs involving clinical, teaching
and research aspects. The sole objective of the Department is to
provide first-class patient-care services in conjunction with medical,
nursing and laboratory staff, by expert handling of drugs and quality
assurance of appropriate drug use.

Procurement and appropriate storage of drugs and other
pharmaceutical necessities of the highest quality as per the
approved Hospital Formulary.

Provision of up-to-date clinical and pharmaceutical information on
drug therapy to physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other health
professionals through the Drug and Poison Information (DPIC)
services, the bimonthly KKMCH PHARMACY BULLETIN, regular lectures in
the Pharmacy Department Continuing Education series and day-to-day
interactions with clinical staff.

Provision of specialized consultative services in the area of
pharmacokinetics, nutrition and other fields of therapeutics related
to pharmacy.

Verification of drug-related orders to ensure optimal patient care
through safe and appropriate use of drugs. This involves screening
of drug orders in terms of therapeutic relevance, drug-drug
interactions, drug-food interactions, allergic reactions and
incompatibilities.

Preparation and dispensing of prescribed drugs for patient use. In
order to reduce wastage and improve accuracy, doses for in-patients
are dispensed in ready-to-use packaging for 24 hours (Unit-dose
system). Out-patient prescriptions are computerized and dispensed
in appropriate containers with instructions for use in either Arabic
or English. In all cases, the expiry date of each medication is
clearly stated on the label and a computerized database is
established for every prescription.

Formulation, preparation and dispensing
of intravenous fluid admixtures including total parenteral nutrition
regimens.

Formulation, preparation and dispensing
of extemporaneous preparations.

Reporting system for adverse drug
reaction and follow-up.

Participation in drug-use evaluation
and quality control systems.

Continuing Pharmacy education for all
Pharmacy staff and participation in other educational programs
relevant to pharmaceutical care.

The Department runs the
Out-Patient Pharmacy
in the
main Hospital on a 24-hour basis
everyday.

It also runs
the Pharmacy Units
in the Primary Health Care Clinics and the Dental Centrum located
in King Khalid Military City.

Information Center can be contacted by telephone on Extension 2874
within working hours.
After office hours, drug information enquiries should be directed
to the Out-patient Pharmacy on Ext. 2622 or 2623.
