PHARMACEUTICAL SERVICES

The Department of Pharmaceutical Services provides comprehensive pharmaceutical services to patients, physicians and staff as an integral part of all Hospital programs involving clinical, teaching and research aspects.  The sole objective of the Department is to provide first-class patient-care services in conjunction with medical, nursing and laboratory staff, by expert handling of drugs and quality assurance of appropriate drug use.

This objective shall be pursued as follows:

  1. Procurement and appropriate storage of drugs and other pharmaceutical necessities of the highest quality as per the approved Hospital Formulary.

  2. Provision of up-to-date clinical and pharmaceutical information on drug therapy to physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other health professionals through the Drug and Poison Information (DPIC) services, the bimonthly KKMCH PHARMACY BULLETIN, regular lectures in the Pharmacy Department Continuing Education series and day-to-day interactions with clinical staff.

  3. Provision of specialized consultative services in the area of pharmacokinetics, nutrition and other fields of therapeutics related to pharmacy.

  4. Verification of drug-related orders to ensure optimal patient care through safe and appropriate use of drugs.  This involves screening of drug orders in terms of therapeutic relevance, drug-drug interactions, drug-food interactions, allergic reactions and incompatibilities.

  5. Preparation and dispensing of prescribed drugs for patient use.  In order to reduce wastage and improve accuracy, doses for in-patients are dispensed in ready-to-use packaging for 24 hours (Unit-dose system).  Out-patient prescriptions are computerized and dispensed in appropriate containers with instructions for use in either Arabic or English.  In all cases, the expiry date of each medication is clearly stated on the label and a computerized database is established for every prescription.

  1. Formulation, preparation and dispensing of intravenous fluid admixtures including total parenteral nutrition regimens.

  2. Formulation, preparation and dispensing of extemporaneous preparations.

  3. Reporting system for adverse drug reaction and follow-up.

  4. Participation in drug-use evaluation and quality control systems.

  5. Continuing Pharmacy education for all Pharmacy staff and participation in other educational programs relevant to pharmaceutical care.
